Qualifications

Academic

  • Bachelor's degree (completed or soon to be) required
  • Problem-solving and analytical abilities gained from a background in science or engineering would be helpful.
  • This is excellent experience for someone who is pre-med and would like to attend medical school or physician assistant school in the future. We will provide excellent references for applications.
  • Significant experience with autism
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Proficient using online tools to store and organize information such as Google Docs, Google Calendar, OneNote

Social/Management

  • Excellent at juggling multiple responsibilities with outstanding time management
  • Take initiative, simultaneously manage short term and long term goals
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills, and strategic thinking
  • Detail oriented and willing to read without skimming
  • Excellent communication skills, especially by phone
  • Kind, conscientious, fun-loving and compassionate
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to provide timely notice if unable to come to work
  • Is someone who the client can trust and respect, while also being fun to be around
  • Understands importance and appropriateness of safety issues when in public, particularly regarding leaving the client alone for more than a few minutes in hot weather (this is severely detrimental to their health)
  • Understands and appropriately minimizes the risks of leaving a vulnerable client alone with strangers in public
  • Background check and references required

Physical

  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including boosters (now and in the future as recommended); fully vaccinated against the flu
  • Understands the substantial risk COVID poses to the client, as they are immunocompromised
  • In good physical shape
  • Able to push an adult in a wheelchair
  • Able to lift 15 pounds
  • Has good physical stamina
  • Is a non-smoker
  • Able to clean a kitchen, bathroom, or other areas of the house
  • Some days will be physically challenging, involving 6 hours of driving to and from multiple medical appointments and going grocery shopping, followed by 2 or more hours of housework in addition to assisting with the client's ADLs throughout the day. Other days will not require you to leave the client's home at all and require far less physical exertion.
  • Able to clean up and organize multiple rooms daily, including occasionally reorganizing bookshelves, glassware, dishware, or other similar items.

Past experience required:

  • 0-3 years work experience, with relevant summer jobs / internships sufficient
  • Caring for someone with a disability (essential although it can be part time / summer)
  • Providing services for people with autism (essential although it can be part time / summer)
  • Experience with children or young adults with disabilities can be either in a camp, educational, social, or personal setting
  • Organizing fun activities for and actively engaging with a client
  • Assisting with behavioral management and implementing a behavioral plan
